Make your mark in the hairdressing world as an intermediate stylist.

You could get a job styling hair at a top salon or on a film set. It’s a creative career where you'll get to develop your own personal style and help people feel their best.

This qualification will give you the technical skills you need to master complex hair styling techniques.

You will graduate with experience in cutting, colouring and styling hair, as well as hair-up techniques for real clients in an Auckland salon or in MIT’s very own salon ‘Hair at MIT’.

Academic requirements

The New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) or equivalent skills and knowledge.

International students: English language entry requirements

International students will generally be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency, for this programme an IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0 is required. Special & discretionary admission

Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.

You will need to complete the below four courses (120 credits):

891.425 Foundation styling and salon practice (30 credits)

To provide students with the practical skills to be able to style and finish clients and practice advanced salon skills.

  • Perform a full consultation including hair and scalp analysis for styling services
  • Select and recommend retail styling products appropriate to the service
  • Blow wave and set hair into complex styles
  • Perform styling tasks, including finger waving, and complex long hairstyles
  • Apply banking procedures in the salon environment, using basic accounting concepts and knowledge of costs associated with the operation of a salon
  • Follow safe and professional practices in a salon.

891.426 Foundation colouring and chemical treatments (30 credits)

To provide students with the practical skills to be able to apply colouring and chemical treatments to clients under supervision.

  • Perform a full consultation including hair and scalp analysis for chemical services
  • Select and recommend retail home hair care products, and offer appropriate maintenance advice to maintain the chemical service
  • Select, and apply colouring products for a range of services including highlighting, midway and permanent products using a variety of techniques
  • Assist with a straightening service
  • Assist with a permanent wave service
  • Follow safe and professional practices in a salon.

891.427 Intermediate cutting (30 credits)

This course provides students with the practical skills to be able to provide intermediate cuts to clients in a salon.

  • Perform an in-depth consultation including hair and scalp analysis for cutting services
  • Cut hair into foundation forms using scissors and clippers
  • Cut hair using razor techniques
  • Follow safe and professional practices in a salon.

891.428 Intermediate colouring and chemical treatments (30 credits)

To provide students with the practical skills to be able to apply intermediate colouring and chemical treatments to clients in a salon.

  • Perform an in-depth consultation including hair and scalp analysis for chemical services
  • Apply colour correction and/or bleaching processes using appropriate techniques in a safe manner
  • Follow safe and professional practices in a salon.

Intermediate positions in salons leading on to work on cruise liners, as company technicians, in-salon management or ownership, as artistic team demonstrators, trainers, tutors, television, stage or screen work. For potential salaries visit careers.govt.nz.

Free study for the first year of your Level 3 or above qualification may be available under the government’s fees-free study scheme. Visit feesfree.govt.nz for eligibility criteria and more information. Students must be eligible to study as a domestic student. Free study for up to one year for Levels 3 and 4 may be available under Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT), a government-led training initiative to encourage young Māori and Pasifika people to gain trade qualifications. All free study is subject to funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs, may also apply. Eligibility for student allowances or student loans may vary.
