Choose your test format. You have the choice of taking your IELTS test on a computer or on paper.
Learn more about IELTS on computer or on paper test formats.
IELTS on paper: If you have special requirements, please register for IELTS on paper. Your results will be available 13 days after your test.
IELTS on computer: With IELTS on computer, you will now have more test dates to choose from. Your results will be available in 3-5 days.
All other aspects of the test are exactly the same, whether it is taken on paper or on the computer, including:
- Content
- Timings
- Question types
- Scoring
- Speaking test delivery
- Test report forms
- Results verification.

Ready to Book your IELTS test?
Applying online for your British Council IELTS test is easy.
Before you start make sure you have an electronic colour copy of your passport (JPEG, GIF or PNG) ready to upload in your application.
If you need help, you can contact us on (09) 968 8617 for advice or assistance with booking your test.
Don't have your passport with you?
If you don't have a copy of your passport available you can still submit your online application, then email a copy of your passport.

Include your full name and test date in the subject line.
Once we have received your application, passport copy and payment we will email you confirmation and receipt within 10 business days. You will also receive an access code for the Road to IELTS programme.
