IELTS on paper: If you have special requirements, please register for IELTS on paper. Your results will be available 13 days after your test.
IELTS on computer: With IELTS on computer, you will now have more test dates to choose from. Your results will be available in 3-5 days.
All other aspects of the test are exactly the same, whether it is taken on paper or on the computer, including:

- Timings
- Question types
- Scoring
- Speaking test delivery
- Test report forms
- Results verification.

Applying online for your British Council IELTS test is easy.
Before you start make sure you have an electronic colour copy of your passport (JPEG, GIF or PNG) ready to upload in your application.

Don't have your passport with you?
If you don't have a copy of your passport available you can still submit your online application, then email a copy of your passport.

Include your full name and test date in the subject line.
Once we have received your application, passport copy and payment we will email you confirmation and receipt within 10 business days. You will also receive an access code for the Road to IELTS programme.

I booked IELTS on computer – however I would have preferred doing my test on paper because it’s faster for me to write then type, but the IELTS computer test was actually fine and overall, the test was really good.

“I am originally from India, but I have been in New Zealand for four years now. I moved to New Zealand to study and for career opportunities. When I arrived, I started my studies at MIT, and completed a degree in electrical engineering, specialising in electronics.

I did an IELTS paper test before coming to NZ. I also did a TOEFL test ‘on computer’ for the USA which I found much easier compared to the paper-based test, so I chose IELTS on computer with MIT.
The test went well, it was easy, staff were friendly, the location was convenient for me, and I felt well prepared. In preparation for my test, I used the free British Council IELTS app which was very helpful, and there are two free tests available which was good preparation for me also.
