Do you want a career in the New Zealand Police? Not sure if you have the essential skills to make the grade?

Get a head start on meeting the requirements you need to get accepted into the Royal New Zealand Police College. You will also develop the self-management skills you need to succeed in your training to become a police officer.

Our classrooms are supportive learning environments that will help you become more confident and independent.

In order to be accepted into the Royal New Zealand Police College you must meet their selection criteria which includes being over 18 years, being able to pass a police check, and having a full drivers licence.

You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.

Open entry for domestic students

There are no academic requirements that need to be met to enter this programme.

International students: English language entry requirements

For the minimum English language requirements refer to the requirements set out in the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/providers-partners/qa-system-for-teos/english-international-students/

International students will generally be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency, for this programme an IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 is required. You will need to complete the below three courses (60 credits):

141.324 Mathematics in practice (police studies) (15 credits)

Develop and expand the students' knowledge and understanding of numeracy through authentic learning experiences in the area of Police Studies in order to meet the varied demands of their personal life, study and intended career destination in the NZ Police.

161.318 Pathway projects (police studies) (30 credits)

Progressively apply, consolidate and demonstrate the skills and knowledge developed in this and the Numeracy and Literacy courses through authentic learning experiences in order to meet the varied demands of their personal life, study and intended career destination in the Police Studies field.

Pathway Projects may be split into two courses

181.340 Communication in practice (police studies) (15 credits)

Develop and expand the students’ knowledge and understanding of literacy through authentic learning experiences in the Police Studies field, in order to meet the varied demands of their personal life, study and intended career destination in the NZ Police.

Careers and pathways

Free study for the first year of your Level 3 or above qualification may be available under the government’s fees-free study scheme. Visit feesfree.govt.nz for eligibility criteria and more information. Students must be eligible to study as a domestic student. Free study for Level 3 may be available for 16 to 24 year olds (Youth Guarantee). All free study is subject to funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required.
