MIT’s Tertiary High School ‘a bridge’ to the future

“Despite everything that has happened in the midst of COVID-19, these kids stepped up to the mark,” says School of Secondary Tertiary Studies (SSTS) Principal, Toe Pune who couldn’t be more proud of this year’s graduating class.

The school provides an opportunity to complete NCEA qualifications in Level 1, 2 and 3 as well as University Entrance. At the same time, students get a taste of various trades and courses available at MIT to help map out the future.

Last week, Manukau Institute of Technology celebrated the Graduation Ceremony of SSTS students for 2020.

Professor Emeritus Stuart Middleton, who created the internationally-recognised school model, describes how “you’re allowed to move faster here - it’s quite remarkable.”

“It’s a radical programme and I’m disappointed that it hasn’t been taken up more. That’s only because education in New Zealand refuses to change. It provides a bridge from school to employment or tertiary study, particularly for students at risk of disengaging from education.”

Year 12 student, Daniel Pele received his NCEA Level 2 Certificate, the Year 12 Top Attendance Award and the Tangata Tiratiratu – Excellence in Citizenship Award.

“Being here was a really good experience,” describes Daniel. “We would be in small classes of seven or eight.”

He plans on coming back to complete his NCEA Level 3 and would then like to move into studying construction at MIT.
