Students from our Bachelor of Applied Counselling course have caught the attention of national mental health advocate Mike King and his I Am Hope foundation.

Part of the three-year degree programme, which includes on-campus, self-directed and online learning, is a 200-hour practicum placement under the supervision of a trained counsellor.

Thanks to a recent initiative by I Am Hope to improve access to counselling services across all schools, our ākonga (students) can now offer help to primary and intermediate school communities, under the supervision of the foundation’s clinical lead, Carla King.

Wilbyn Mitchell, lecturer at the MIT Te PūkengaSchool of Health and Counselling, and a graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Counselling degree, says that the collaboration with I Am Hope is of tremendous benefit to our students.

“It gives them the opportunity to apply their skills and put the theory they learn in the programme into practice. It also enables them to meet the practicum placement requirements so they can get professional membership after they graduate,” he says.

“Thanks to the I Am Hope programme students can do this in a safe, ethical and supported environment, while also offering valuable mental health support to some of our most vulnerable young people.”

Ms King is currently supervising four of our ākonga on their practicum placement at primary and intermediate schools in South Auckland.

She is very enthusiastic about the calibre of our learners, and the support they’re offering school communities.

"I have found the quality of MIT students to be outstanding and they have been able to fit easily with the needs of our schools,” she says.

“Each student brings with them something uniquely different, but the one thing they have in common is a passion for working with our rangatahi and a true commitment to our Counselling in 篮球比分,篮球即时比分 programme.”

This view was shared by Mike King, founding ambassador of I Am Hope, who says,

"The MIT students, through our new Counsellors in 篮球比分,篮球即时比分 programme, have profoundly uplifted the wellbeing of primary school students, exceeding our wildest expectations.

“Whatever they're teaching at MIT, we need more of it!"

There were more than 40 graduates from the Bachelor of Applied Counselling course last year, with most going into counselling and support roles in schools and community agencies.
