Do you want to become a builder?
This qualification is for anyone wanting to start out in the construction industry who doesn't have an apprenticeship.
You will get hands-on experience building projects and gain skills to operate power tools and hand tools.
When you graduate, you will have entry-level skills to enter the construction trade as a carpentry/building apprentice or labourer working under supervision.
Tool kit supplied
You will receive a tool kit of equipment you need to complete your studies.

Entry requirements
General
Open Entry if the delegated authority at the campus/site is satisfied that the applicant has the capability to complete the requirements of the programme.
English language entry requirements
Applicants for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language are required to provide proof of English proficiency.
The required level of proficiency for this programme is IELTS (General) score of 5 with no individual band lower than 5 from a single test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
Domestic learners who have completed the majority or all of their education in New Zealand are deemed to have met this requirement.

Programme structure
You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):
Core compulsory courses
CARP3001 Workplace Safety Fundamentals (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to work safely in a construction trades environment.
CARP3002 Core Construction and Communication Skills (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to utilise core construction and communication skills.
Carpentry strand courses
CARP3101 Preliminary Works for Construction (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the preparation of a building site for a construction project.
CARP3102 Support Structures for Building Work (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the construction of for support structures and floor systems.
CARP3103 Wall Structures for Building Work (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the construction of wall structures.
CARP3104 Roof Structures for Building Work (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the construction of roof structures.
CARP3105 Exterior Envelope (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the installation of exterior envelope systems.
CARP3106 Interior Linings and Finishing (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to participate in the fit-out of the interior of a building.

Further training or study
Upon graduating you could enter an apprenticeship, or remain with MIT to complete the next level qualification. Apprenticeships in the construction industry includes the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) through MIT or an ITO.

Free study for the first year of your Level 3 or above qualification may be available under the government’s fees-free study scheme. Visit feesfree.govt.nz for eligibility criteria and more information. Students must be eligible to study as a domestic student. Free study for Level 3 may be available for 16 to 24 year olds (Youth Guarantee). Free study for up to one year for Levels 3 and 4 may be available under Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT), a government-led training initiative to encourage young Māori and Pasifika people to gain trade qualifications. All free study is subject to funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs, may also apply. Eligibility for student allowances or student loans may vary.
