This programme is for learners who have a basic understanding and ability in the use of Te Reo Māori and have a genuine desire to communicate with little support in familiar everyday contexts and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.

You will:

  • Learn basic Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Be able to express basic connections to the land, environment and people of the area
  • Apply technical knowledge of foundation-level reo Māori
  • Develop respect for te reo Māori as you learn about yourself and others.

There are no academic entry requirements for Domestic or International Tauira.

English language entry requirements

Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake the bilingual programme, which is taught in English.

You will need to complete the below four courses (60 credits):

672.208 Mana Tangata 2 (Kōrero mōna ake me āna mahi) (15 credits)

Ka whakamahi ngā Tauira i ngā kupu Māori, i ngā hanganga wetereo hoki ki tōna taumata ā-tumu mā roto atu i ngā mātāpono hei tohu i te mana tangata.

Tauira will use Te Reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures at a foundation level as an expression of mana tangata.

672.209 Mana Whenua 2 (Whakamāramatia ngā kōrero me ngā mahi a tētahi atu) (15 credits)

Ka whakamahi nga Tauira i Te Reo o te taumata ātumu mā te kōrero i ōna ake hononga ki te whenua, ki te taiao hoki, ki ngā wāhi me ngā tāngata rongonui o te rohe, hei whakaputanga i te mana whenua.

Tauira will use foundation-level Reo Māori to express connections to the land, the environment, prominent people of the areas, as an expression of mana whenua.

672.210 Mana Reo 2 (Tuhituhi korero mōna ake me ana mahi) (15 credits)

Ka whakamahi ngā Tauira i ngā whakanakotanga o te reo, ki tōna taumata ā-tumu, I roto i ētahi horopaki kua tohua, me te whakapakari i te whakaaronui ki te mana o te reo.

Tauira will apply technical knowledge of foundation level Reo Māori in selected contexts and develop an emerging respect for Te Reo as an expression of mana reo.

672.211 Mana Ao Turoa 2 (Pānui i ngā tuhinga kōrero mō tētahi atu) (15 credits)

Ka whakamahi ngā Tauira i te reo ki tōna taumata ātumu, ki te whakatutuki i ētahi mahi i ngā horopaki kua āta tohua mā roto atu i ngā mātāpono hei tohu i te mana ao tūroa.

Tauira will use foundation level Te Reo Māori to achieve tasks in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao turoa.

The qualification provides a pathway for those seeking to improve or further develop their knowledge and skills in Te Reo Māori. Graduates may pathway to:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua) (Level 3) Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 3)

All Level 1 and 2 programmes excluding First Aid certificate courses will be free in 2024 for New Zealand citizens, residents entitled to reside in New Zealand indefinitely, and refugees and protected persons (under the Immigration Act 2009), of all ages, and dependent children of people eligible for the 2021 Resident Visa, that are eligible for tertiary study. All free study is subject to funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs, may also apply. Eligibility for student allowances or student loans may vary.
