Learn the most effective strategies to teach adults essential skills in literacy and numeracy.

This programme is for anyone who wants to work as a vocational or workplace educator and trainer and is essential for those working with foundation students at levels 1 and 2. You will learn how to tailor your teaching to suit the educational needs of your students.

With blended delivery you can study full-time or part-time so your study can fit around your work and life commitments.

General

Applicants must be currently teaching or have regular access to tertiary teaching or vocational training environments.

Academic criteria

Applicants must hold a nationally recognised Level 4 qualification in any discipline or equivalent (if equivalent, applicants may be required to attend an interview to determine their suitability to study on this level 5 programme).

English language requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 or no band lower than 5.

Safety checking

If working with learners under 18 years of age then applicants will need to meet the requirements of the Vulnerable Children's Act through an attestation from their employer.

Special & discretionary admission

Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.

You will need to complete the below four courses (40 credits):

103.501 The Literacy and Numeracy Journey in Aotearoa (10 credits)

To explore adult literacy and numeracy education in Aotearoa.

103.502 Learner Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tools (10 credits)

Develop skills in using appropriate adult literacy and numeracy assessment tools within vocational and/or educational settings.

761.506 Celebrating Diversity (10 credits)

Develop an appreciation of the diversity of learners in New Zealand and the importance of cultural competency when applying literacy and numeracy frameworks.

905.525 Learner-Centred Design (10 credits)

To develop learner centred design skills including mapping, embedding and evaluating adult literacy and numeracy processes in a variety of vocational and educational settings.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge for roles such as a vocational or workplace educator and trainer with the ability to embed literacy and numeracy into their programme.

Graduates of this programme can have credit recognized for two courses (Celebrating Diversity and Learner Centred Design) towards the New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5). For potential salaries visit careers.govt.nz.

*This programme will be free for New Zealand citizens, residents entitled to reside in New Zealand inde?nitely, and refugees and protected persons (under the Immigration Act 2009), of all ages, and dependent children of people eligible for the 2021 Resident Visa, that are eligible for tertiary study. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria apply, and some costs may also apply.
