Programme highlights

Get started with the skills to become a valued member of a café or functions team, plus get the advantage of real-world experience at industry events and functions.

You will prepare and serve the types of food and beverages offered at cafes and functions. You will develop the professional communication skills to serve customers and deal with any customer service issues.

Learn to work safely and to regulations in hospitality environments and when handling food.

You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.

Open Entry, if the delegated authority at the campus/site is satisfied that the applicant has the capability to complete the requirements of the programme.

English language requirements

All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.

International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

You will need to complete the below three courses (60 credits):

HOSP3201 Food and beverage core skills  (20 credits)

To establish standards of professional practice for basic service in hospitality food and beverage establishments. As part of this course, you will also gain Unit standard "US27955 - Apply food safety practices in a food related establishment".

HOSP3204 Café service (20 credits)

To provide learners with an opportunity to develop basic skills required to deliver food and beverage service in a café.

HOSP3205 Function service (20 credits)

To provide learners with an opportunity to develop basic skills required to deliver food and beverage service in a function service environment.

Career opportunities

Graduates may be employed as service personnel in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, bars or clubs, restaurants which provide table and/or buffet services, establishments which cater to functions, or baristas in hospitality establishments, or a crew member in a quick service restaurant. Free study for the first year of your Level 3 or above qualification may be available under the government’s fees-free study scheme. Visit feesfree.govt.nz for eligibility criteria and more information. Students must be eligible to study as a domestic student. Free study for Level 3 may be available for 16 to 24 year olds (Youth Guarantee). Free study for up to one year for Levels 3 and 4 may be available under Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT), a government-led training initiative to encourage young Māori and Pasifika people to gain trade qualifications. All free study is subject to funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs, may also apply. Eligibility for student allowances or student loans may vary.
