Human resource administration

Learn the fundamentals of database record management, advanced Word and Excel, human resource policies and processes, human resource administration and payroll software.

Medical administration

Learn how to operate MedTech32, create medical documentation using advanced Word, Excel and Olympus transcription. Gain knowledge to work professionally in health administration and be work ready for positions in general practice, hospital reception and administration. There are opportunities for work placement/observation in a local hospital and general practice during the course.

    General admission

    To be admitted to this programme applicants must hold one of the following:

    • 40 credits at NCEA Level 1, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits, or
    • a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2 or above, or
    • a recognised equivalent.

    English language entry requirements

    All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.

    International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

    Special & discretionary admission

    Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.

    You will need to complete the below four courses (60 credits):

    BSNS4201 Administrative systems (15 credits)

    To develop knowledge and skills to provide, improve and maintain administration services.

    Upon successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

    • Maintain administration systems and business processes to meet business needs
    • Recommend improvements to administration processes and systems to meet business needs
    • Provide administrative services to meet business needs.

    BSNS4202 Specialist documents (15 credits)

    To develop knowledge and skills to process data and produce specialist documents.

    Upon successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

    • Use business applications and technologies to produce specialist documents to meet business needs
    • Process data to produce detailed business information to meet business needs.

    BSNS4203 Workplace knowledge (15 credits)

    To develop knowledge and skills to deliver professional customer services that meet business requirements and work collaboratively within a team.

    Upon successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

    • Work collaboratively to meet team objectives in a business context
    • Demonstrate customer services techniques to consistently met business needs
    • Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour, and social and cultural awareness in a business context.

    BSNS4204 Business information (15 credits)

    To develop knowledge and technical skills to produce comprehensive business information.

    Upon successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

    • Select and apply business applications and technologies to produce business information
    • Perform detailed financial calculations to produce business information.

    You will need to select one specialisation (human resource administration or medical administration) according to your individual employment goals.

    Graduates of this qualification will be able to apply business technologies to perform a wide range of administrative duties and tasks under broad guidance, in accordance with ngā kaupapa o te Tiriti o Waitangi (the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi), and in a multi-cultural environment.

    Such intermediate positions may be: Office administrator; Human resource administrator; Payroll administrator; Frontline receptionist; Customer service representative; Medical receptionist; Medical secretary; Medical ward processor; Emergency care; Ward/clinical records and booking clerk or Clinical administrator.
