Business Internship Information

About Business Internships

The MIT | Te Pūkenga School of Business has a level 7 Degree, the Bachelor of Applied Management (B.App.Mgmt) that can be obtained with single or double majors in different specialisation areas, as well as a Bachelor of Accounting.

We also offer a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting (Grad.Dip).

When do our ākonga (learners) complete industry projects?

To satisfy the Programme requirements for the B.App.Mgmt, ākonga (learners) have to undertake a 60 credit capstone course, the Co-operative Education Project and Grad.Dip ākonga (learners) undertake a 45 credit for CPA and CAANZ pathway and 30 credit capstone course, the Industry Project.

These courses require the ākonga (learner) to undertake an organisational research project and complete work experience in the organisation. This is to give ākonga (learners) work experience, help them develop soft skills for a workplace, and expose them to work activities in their chosen field.

?konga (learners) undertake these workplace activities as an “intern” and not as an employee. The ratio of research project time to work experience time is negotiable and will be finalized when the contract is signed between MIT representatives and the organisation’s representative(s).

Businesses are not required to pay salaries to the ākonga (learner) and this work is not meant to replace any paid position in an organisation.

Placement hours are 20 hours per week for 14-16 weeks.

The timeframe for these align to semester intakes and are approximately held between early-mid March – end of June/early July (Semester 1) and the end of July – early December (Semester 2).

What is required for the research project?

Additional to the work experience, learners also needed to participate in a research project. The research project involves:

  • Identifying a research question that is of interest to the organisation
  • Preparing a research proposal to investigate the research question
  • Undertaking a literature review to understand the problem
  • Collecting information in the organisation to understand/address the problem
  • Prepare a written report of the findings
  • Present findings to the organisation.

Any information gathered for this project remains confidential. Summary findings will be reviewed by both an organisation supervisor and an academic supervisor. However, these reports will not be retained or used by MIT for any other purpose unless required for assessment moderating.

Academic mentoring of the ākonga (learner)

MIT will have academic staff mentoring learners throughout the research project. We do however require the involvement of an organisational member to oversee the learner’s progress in the workplace, review their project results and complete a performance appraisal for the work experience and project.
