Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (EAS)

Who should attend

Technicians and tradespeople who do not require full electrical registration, but work with equipment that have an electrical rating of not more than 250 volts mains supply.

Course highlights

This course prepares participants for the Electrical Workers’ Registration Board (EWRB) examinations for registration to carry out limited electrical servicing work as per their Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (Endorsed Disconnect and Reconnect) (EAS-Q) Certificate.  Course content covers the theory and practical (skills) requirements set out by the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB).  Further details on course content can be found on the EWRB website under Teaching Guidelines.

All electrical work must be undertaken according to current Electrical Legislation.

As directed by the EWRB, new trainees/practitioners are to obtain a Practitioner ID.  You will need to sign up on the EWRB’s website https://kete.mbie.govt.nz/EW/ewnewuser/.

Once you have been issued with your Practitioner ID, please include this on the Application Enrolment form submitted to technology_administration@manukau.ac.nz when registering to attend the course.

A minimum of 12 complete enrolment applications required before a course date is confirmed for delivery.

Course structure

In order to gain the most from the course, the following documents are required:

Legislation

  • Electricity Act 1992 reprint 4 April 2016 or reprint 1 July 2017
  • Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 reprint as at 4 April 2016

Standards

  • AS/NZS 3000:2007 - Electrical Installations (known as the Australian/ New Zealand Wiring Rules) including Amendment 1 and 2
  • AS/NZS 3760 2010 - including amendments 1 & 2 in service safety testing of appliances.

You are provided a username and password (5 days prior to the start date of the course) to the MIT Library website, where you can download the above; you will be responsible for printing these books.

Course requirements

In order to gain the most from the course, you are required to bring the following:

  • Scientific Calculator
  • Pen, Pencil, Eraser, Ruler, Liquid paper (white out)
  • Ensure you have the tools listed below:
  • Linemans pliers
  • Longnose pliers
  • Sidecutters
  • Safety glasses
  • Stanley knife
  • Electricians screwdrivers. Screw drivers should include a 4mm flat blade and a #2 posi drive (square)

Examination information

Before a trainee can enrol in an exam with ASPEQ they will need a Practitioner ID.  All candidates must register and book their exam at EWRB’s websitet https://ewrb.aspeqexams.com. The ASPEQ exam fee is $155.25 and will be requested to be paid at the time of application.

Since the introduction of on-line exams in September 2018 all EWRB approved
examinations have been coordinated by ASPEQ Limited. They are a privately-owned company that provides on-line exams on behalf of the EWRB. Exams are run year-round and are available in a number of centres throughout New Zealand.
