Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Academic

Applicants will either have the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Supervisor) Level 4 or equivalent; or

Relevant current industry experience to be supported by a validated portfolio of industry experience.

Applicants must be working in a medium sized building or commercial working environment.

It is expected that applicants will have existing knowledge and skills in the trade that they will be supervising.

English language entry requirements

You will need English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English (an assessment may be required if your first language is not English).

Interviews

An orientation evening will be held for all applicants to enable sharing of work experience, prior learning, and consideration whether this qualification is appropriate for their career path.

The evening will also provide an opportunity to outline the programme and ensure that: the applicant has applied for the most appropriate programme.

Selection

Applicants who meet the entry requirements will be accepted on to the programme on a first-come-first served basis.

Provisional entry

Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme or training scheme may be eligible to be enrolled. Such decisions must consider any applicable pre-requisites and will be made by the Head of School. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements may also be eligible to be enrolled in exceptional circumstances where they can demonstrate capability for study at the required level. Such decisions must consider any applicable pre-requisites and will be made by the Head of School.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below four courses (57 credits):

215.503 Concrete Construction methods and weatherproofing systems

Apply a broad range of technical theoretical and operational knowledge of current building and construction practices as they apply to the construction of medium buildings in a supervisory role

215.504 Supervision of sub-trades for a medium build

Supervise workers and subcontractors through effective communication, professionalism and planning to the completion of their portion of a medium building construction project to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in a commercial environment

215.505 Non-structural exterior and ceiling wall systems

Supervise workers and subcontractors through effective communication, professionalism and planning to the completion of their portion of a medium building construction project to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in a commercial environment

215.506 Building Construction methods and order lists

Apply a broad range of technical theoretical and operational knowledge of current building and construction practices as they apply to the construction of medium buildings in a supervisory role

Careers and pathways

Further training or study

This certificate could lead to further study at diploma or degree level in the field of Management, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Technology or any other building and construction-related fields.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5) will be able to work in residential or commercial construction as:

  • Main Contract Supervisors
  • Business Ownership/Operators

With further training and/or experience, graduates may be able to work in residential or commercial construction as:

  • Site Managers
  • Construction Managers
  • Project Managers
  • Contract Managers
