Are you a student or already in the industry and looking for higher qualifications to build on what you know and improve your career prospects in the world of business? Whatever your circumstances, this diploma will provide you with the knowledge you need to show you are ready for a new challenge.

Graduates of this programme will be able to apply broad knowledge of the principles and current practices of operations, accounting, marketing/sales, human resources, and risk management, to support the performance of a business.

You'll also learn about innovation and organisational change, communicating with team members and stakeholders, professional and ethical behaviour and applying knowledge of te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Leadership and management strand

You'll also learn how to:

  • Identify operational issues and challenges and apply techniques for continuous improvement to support the entity's performance
  • Contribute to business planning to support the entity's performance
  • Lead others to implement activities, including change processes, within the entity's plans to support its performance
  • Manage projects within scope, resources, and time
  • Develop strategies for a positive workplace culture and team engagement, to value diversity and to support the entity's performance.
  • Monitor compliance to meet internal and external requirements.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to this programme all applicants must be at least 16 years of age on the date the programme starts, and meet one of the following requirements:

  • NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an approved qualification at Level 3 or above with a relevant pathway.

Special and Discretionary admission is also available.

International applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the Programme as demonstrated by an IELTS score of 5.5 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.0 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies to analyse organisations and engage with stakeholders in an Aotearoa New Zealand context.

BSNS5002 Business environments (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies to analyse and manage the impact of environmental influences on an organisation.

BSNS5003 Business functions (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies relevant to the core business functions of accounting, operations, human resource management, marketing and sales.

BSNS5004 Change and innovation (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies to contribute to organisational change and innovation.

ACCY5101 Introduction to accounting and taxation (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies to apply accounting concepts, standards, processes, and tax rules to prepare financial statements.

ACCY5102 Applied accounting (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills and competencies to record and process a range of financial transactions.

ACCY5103 Analysis of financial information (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills and competencies to calculate, analyse and interpret financial information to inform decision making for an organisation.

ACCY5104 Budgets for planning and control (15 credits)

This course develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies to prepare and use budgets to monitor performance and determine internal controls to minimise risk for an organisation.

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies to support people to achieve organisational objectives, by applying human resource strategies.

BSNS5303 Introduction to health, safety and wellbeing (15 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies to apply health (hauora), safety and wellbeing policies and practices within Aotearoa New Zealand organisations.

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies to support people to contribute to organisational change with human resource initiatives.

Career opportunities

Accounting strand

Graduates will be able to apply in-depth accounting and ?nance knowledge and skills to inform operational business decisions in a variety of business entities in accounting and business roles and may also be able to contribute to community groups in volunteer accounting functions.

Administration and technology strand

Graduates of the Administration and Technology strand may be employed in a wide range of administration roles in a variety of sectors. Graduates may also be able to contribute to community groups.

Human resource management strand

Graduates of the Human Resource Management strand may be employed in a variety of business entities in entry-level Human Resource roles or in management roles.

Leadership and management strand

Graduates of the Leadership and Management strand may be employed in a managerial/leadership operational role within New Zealand business entities.

Marketing and sales strand

Graduates of the Marketing and Sales strand may be employed in marketing and sales entry-level roles in a variety of business entities. Graduates may also be able to contribute to community groups in volunteer marketing and sales functions.

Project management strand

Graduates of the Project Management strand may be employed as project managers in a variety of business entities. Graduates may also be able to contribute to community groups in volunteer project management roles.
